- 2 tsp garlic paste
- 1/2 tsp turmeric
- 2 tsp chilli powder
- 1 tbsp coriander cumin powder
- 1.5 tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 1 tomato finely chopped
- 2 tbsp coriander leaves
- Tadka -
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 8 cloves garlic chopped
- 2 green chillies chopped
- 1 dry red chilli
- 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
Steps to make to make Panchmel Daal
- Mix all dal together and wash it properly. Now add it to a pressure cooker along with salt, turmeric and water. Cook it until 3 - 4 whistles on medium heat. Let the pressure come down itself.
- Heat oil in a pot and add bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves and dry red chillies. Now add cumin and let it brown. Add hing and finely chopped onion and saute until light pink in colour. Now add ginger and garlic paste and further cook for a minute on medium heat.
- Now add all the dry spices and mix it well. Add finely chopped tomato and cook it until tomato is soft. Now add cooked dal to it and give it a good mix.
- Add enough water to keep medium thick consistency. You can add more or less water according to your choice. Mix everything well and cook it on medium heat for 10 minutes. Keep stirring in between. When it is done, turn off the heat and add coriander leaves to it.
- To prepare tadka, heat oil in tadka pan, add cumin to it and let it brown. Now add garlic and green chillies to it along with dry red chilli. Cook it on medium heat for a few seconds until it changes colour. Add red chilli powder and turn off the heat. Now pour this tadka over the prepared dal before serving.
- Serve panchmel dal with roti or rice. It tastes really delicious served along with baati and churma.
